.REYNALIZ HERRERA  is a professional musician, percussionist, composer and educator. She was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1984, where she studied and began pursuing music at the Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza, with maestro Noel Savon.

 

 

Reynaliz has performed and collaborated with renowned ensembles such as: The National Arts Center Orchestra of Canada, The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, The Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne, The Boston Conservatory Orchestra,  Mexican Dance Group: Danza Contemporanea en Concierto, The Boston Opera Collaborative and band Muy Cansado. She has engaged in solo recitals and performances which include repertoire of her own works in countries such as U.S.A, Mexico, Cuba, Canada, Spain, Italy and Germany, and has collaborated with prestigious artists such as Bob Becker, Evelyn Glennie, Pinchas Zukerman, Ian Bernard, and Gunter Schuller. She has also been marimba and percussion soloist several times with The National Arts Center Orchestra of Canada (One of them Broadcasted by CBC Radio Canada National wide), and recently made an appearance at the concert series “My first NAC” performing one of her recent compositions. Reynaliz has also appeared in international festivals such as SXSW (Austin), ILLUMINUS (Boston) and at The New York International Fringe Festival 2015 with her own show IDEAS, NOT THEORIES.

 

Reynaliz holds a Bachelor of Music from The University of Ottawa where she studied with Prof. Ian Bernard, Former solo timpanist of the National Arts Center Orchestra (Graduating Summa Cum Laude) and recently graduated from The Boston Conservatory with a Master of Music in Percussion Performance where she studied with renowned percussionists like Nancy Zeltsman, Sam Solomon, John Grimes and Keith Aleo.

 

 

She has also achieved receiving international awards and winning competitions such as The National Youth Award (Mexico, 2005), The State Youth Award (Mexico, 2009), The Festival Percuba´s International Percussion Competition in La Havana, Cuba (2002), The National Arts Center of Canada´s Bursary Competition (2005), and the MTV Latinamerica “agent of change award” (2009).

 

 

Reynaliz is currently working on her own music project “IDEAS, NOT THEORIES” ©  an original performance show of Reynaliz’s own compositions that features percussion theatre using unconventional instruments such as bikes, and body percussion. (Performed in Mexico, US and Canada). Ideas, Not Theories was recently featured inside The New York International Fringe Festival 2015 and at The NYU Day of Percussion 2016. Along those lines, Reynaliz is trying to promote the use of the bicycle as a musical instrument. She is  percussion and music coach at different  programs like The Urbano Project, The El Sistema Somerville, and The Hamilton- Garret Music and Arts Academy.

ABOUT/BIO

IDEAS, NOT THEORIES, is a Percussion Performance Concert created by Reynaliz Herrera. Combining percussion music and theatrical elements, the performance feautures original music (written by Reynaliz) which explores the use of unconventional instruments such as: bikes, tap and body percussion, water, etc, and traditional percussion instruments such as marimbas and drums. All of the musical works are linked together through a storyline and original characters, making the complete performance a unique, quirky and creative artistic experience.

 

IDEAS, NOT THEORIES, had its premier in Monterrey Mexico, inside the Festival de Musica Nueva 2012. (November 2012). Recent performances include:  featured with 5 performances inside The New York International Fringe Festival 2015, as well as at The Lower East Side Girls Club in NYC 2015, and at The New York University Day of Percussion (NYU/KoSA/HLAG) 2016, as well as 3 performances at The Boston Children's Museum (June- July). The show has also performed in Boston, MA at The Lilypad, The Middle East, The Democracy Center,  at Encuentro 5 (2013), and in Ottawa, CA at the National Arts Center (performing excerpts of Ideas, Not Theories), 2014. Future engagements include at The Outside The Box Festival (Boston),  and the Boston Children's Museum (July 2016). The show was also the receipient of an Emergency Grant from The Foundation of Contemporary Arts.
